Saturday April Fourth
178 L St Turners Falls
come around 7:30 or a bit later
loud bands play first
Clare Hubbard, who sings in neon day-glo voice modified crunk group Sports and blows sax in free improv troupe (D)(B)(H), plays beautiful creaky folk of sorts over shimmer and clang of her own devising as Caethua
Phased Out, punk band with spunk from Brattleboro, VT, Kyle Thomas (Witch, Feathers) plays some mean guitar
Please to welcome again Worcester´s Sam Gaskin of Faux Pas Recordings and now the band White Crime.
Quincy Quartz is unknown to me but appears to play music of the electronic variety with a positive life affirming bent, but beware a wolf in sheep's clothing
Cave Bears long hunted only for their pelts. We will be performing our piece "Jump to Your Bed" for the first time in nearly one minute.
Please to welcome again Worcester´s Sam Gaskin of Faux Pas Recordings and now the band White Crime.
Gregory Joseph plays pastoral electronics, ambient crackle and fizz, heavy thudding sounds & busted field recordings from the hills as Servitor. Greg is also a collaborator/organizer of the amazing VHS zine Samurai Dreams.

Films for Thought presents GAZA STRIP 3/23
.Title of Event: Films for Thought presents GAZA STRIP
When: Monday, March 23, 2009 7:00 PM
Location: Food for Thought Books Collective
Description: U.S. filmmaker James Longley's unsettling documentary captures the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with blunt candor. In January of 2001, Longley traveled to the Gaza Strip. His plan was to stay for two weeks to collect preliminary material for a documentary film on the Palestinian Intifada. It was during his stay that Ariel Sharon was elected as Israeli Prime Minister. As violence erupted around him, Longley threw away his return ticket and filmed for the next three months, acquiring nearly 75 hours of footage. Gaza Strip, his first feature documentary, is an extraordinary and painful journey into the lives of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip struggling with the day-to-day trials of the Israeli occupation.
The film will be followed by a panel discusstion with Students for Justice in Palestine (Hampshire College),Laila Shannan, Alisa Klein, and Joseph Levine.
Laila Shannan is a Palestinian who has been living in the United States for ten years. She is the mother of two children. Like many Palestinians, Laila's extended family is divided between four continents, with a good portion coping with daily life on the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
Joseph Levine, a Professor of Philosophy at UMass Amherst, graduated with a BA from UCLA in 1975 and a PhD from Harvard in 1981. He has worked as an activist on Middle East conflict for over 25 years, and published several articles and op-ed pieces on the topic. He lived in Israel for about two years in 1970/71.
Alisa Klein, a resident of Western MA, is a dual citizen of Israel and the United States, and is a veteran of the Israeli army. Raised in a family personally affected by the Holocaust, Israel and Zionism were viewed by her parents as the answer to the historic persecution of the Jews. As a result of her experience in the army, and subsequent academic and professional work in the Arab world, Alisa developed a strong commitment to anti-militarist values and became an anti-Zionist Palestine solidarity organizer. Upon returning to Western MA, Alisa founded and co-organized Akoolu Lakum - the Western Massachusetts Palestinian Film Festival; the Western MA Fast for Palestine Solidarity; and many other vigils and actions calling for a just peace in Israel and Palestine. She served as a facilitator for Kopkind, an educational summer retreat for journalists to learn more about Palestine and Israel and for two years, produced and DJ'ed two shows on Northampton's community radio station WXOJ-LP – one concerned with a radical political analysis of news and culture coming out of the Middle East, and the other an Arabic-language music show.
Students for Justice in Palestine is a student group at Hampshire College whose mission is to raise awareness of the oppression and vast suffering of the Palestinian people under the Israeli occupation. They are also in support of BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) as a viable form of non-violent resistance and strongly support the co-existence of Jewish and Arab peoples. They do not support and in no way encourage the use of violence as any form of solution. Overall, they stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people throughout the world and will continue to strive for their rights to life. As a result of a two year campaign led by SJP, Hampshire College is becoming the first institution of higher learning in the United States to divest from the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine. The Middle East Peace Coalition is a community-based group of activists committed to peace and justice for Israelis and Palestinians, and an end to Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip and to Israeli settlements in those areas.

Magic Triangle tribute to Leroy Jenkins 3/26

THE 2009 MAGIC TRIANGLE JAZZ SERIES PRESENTS:
Three Things to Say: Terry Jenoure, Billy Bang, Charles Burnham pay
tribute to Leroy Jenkins
The Magic Triangle Jazz Series, produced by WMUA, 91.1FM and the Fine
Arts Center at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, continues
its 20th season on Thursday, March 26, 2009 with an 8:00pm performance
by violinists Terry Jenoure, Billy Bang and Charles Burnham, three
master improvising violinists paying homage to the most important
violinist to emerge in the post-Coltrane era: the late Leroy Jenkins.
A veteran of the bands of John Carter, Archie Shepp, Henry Threadgill,
Butch Morris, Reggie Workman and others, Terry Jenoure is a
wide-ranging visual and performing artist. Her sound – on violin and
vocals - blends the risk of improvisation, rhythmic influences from
her Puerto Rican and Jamaican heritage, the drive and excitement of
urban references, and ideas influenced by her world travels. Born and
raised in the Bronx, she began studying music at the age of eight,
attended New York’s High School of Music & Art, received a bachelor's
degree in Philosophy, and masters and doctoral degrees in Education. A
faculty member at the University of Massachusetts and Lesley
University, Jenoure has devoted almost 15 years forging the
development of a multicultural and multi-arts program as the director
for the Augusta Savage Gallery at UMass, Amherst. “When I perform,”
Jenoure says, "it feels as though I'm untangling knots or threads or
webs in some dense place so we can see some light.”
Over the past 30 years, Billy Bang’s hard-edged tone, soulful sense of
traditional swing and evocatively expressive style has enhanced dozens
of albums by top names in a variety of genres, from the blistering
funk of Bootsy Collins and the harmolodic groove of Ronald Shannon
Jackson's Decoding Society to the intergalactic uproar of Sun Ra. With
more than 15 albums under his own leadership, nearly a dozen more in
co-led endeavors, and five more with the String Trio of New York
(which he co-founded in 1977 with guitarist James Emery and bassist
John Lindberg), Billy Bang is one of the more prolific and original
members of the progressive music scene. "From Bang's violin comes
everything we know about black music and a lot we have yet to learn
about rhythm, subtlety and swing," writes Ntozake Shange.
Charles Burnham is best known as one-third of Odyssey, guitarist James
‘Blood’ Ulmer’s finest band (with drummer Warren Benbow.) Odyssey
performed as part of the 2006 Magic Triangle Jazz Series. “…unlike
any other front line in music,” writes Richard Cook about Burnham and
Ulmer. “Playful, joyous, agitated and melodic, they become ten strings
in unison yet independent of one and other. Burnham's step into the
spotlight has long been coming.” The passion and fire of Burnham's
violin has graced the work of Cassandra Wilson, Steven Bernstein,
Susie Ibarra, Henry Threadgrill, String Trio of New York, and Medeski,
Martin & Wood, among many others. The violinist’s new band includes
Clark Gayton and Curtis Fowlkes, trombones, Mark Peterson, bass and
Pheeroan akLaff, drums.
The Magic Triangle Jazz Series continues with the Ganelin Trio
Priority (April 28). Tickets are $12/general public and $7/students
and are available through the Fine Arts Center Box Office,
1-800-999-UMAS.
The Magic Triangle Jazz Concert Series is produced by WMUA-FM and the
Fine Arts Center, and funded by the: UMass Arts Council, Student
Affairs Cultural Enrichment Fund and Alumni Association. Additional
support from: Campus Center Hotel, Amherst College and Faultlines:
Mapping Jazz in the 21st Century and 88.5 WFCR, NPR News and Music for
Western New England.

Receivers is their most critically acclaimed album yet, receiving rave reviews from The New York Times, Pitchfork Media, Rolling Stone and The Onion (A.V. Club), among many others. a coupla midmarch Bookmill joints. . .
Sunday, March 15th at the Montague Bookmill with Asa Irons and Mother of Fire. The show is at 8 pm and $7. hosted by the Autonomous Battleship Collective!
Asa Irons
Before he was in the bands Feathers or Witch, Asa Irons had already created (with childhood friend, Swann Miller) a quietly commanding masterpiece. The lp, Asa Irons & Swaan Miller is a beautiful New England pastoral that is as stoic in places as it is sweet in others and it represents a perfectly appropriate balance if you know Asa at all in real life. Asa is as starry eyed an observer as any, but, just as characteristically, sharper than most, grounded as he is by the stone masonry and carpentry that provide for his living and maintain his perapateticism. In recent years Asa has taken to performing with a set of ancient, gong-like saw blades that, like the man himself, might be equally at ease working in the north woods of New Hampshire as performing for you.
"After spending years in New Hampshire and often Nova Scotia, I began writing songs about my Northeastern window through which I view the world. Most of the pieces represent strong fundamentals in my life such as living without comfort resources like electricity and running water, the building trends of carpentry and masonry with which I make my living, and the slow paced rural life in which I grew up. The land of Northeastern North America is very important to me and compelled me to describe it in the form of music. Many people in my life were musicians - my father, cousins, friends - so I had plenty of good examples to pull from and think about. My style of song writing, I believe, comes from the influence of these loved ones combined with certain deep-rooted melodies or images from books that have stuck with me."
Mother of Fire
"Mother of Fire formed in December of 2007. Collaborating in previous bands, The Royal Flycatchers and Echo Masho, Jason Misik (guitar/bass/drum(s) machine) and his enigmatic counterpart Naomi Joy (violin/vocals) succombed to the frozen forces of winter madness in their basement, while squaring off with their arch enemy the Akai MPC 1000. Once the light and warmth of spring began to thaw the Minnesota landscape, the culmination of their embattled efforts brought them into the studio to record their debut album, which they hope will be mastered, pressed, and released exclusively on vinyl sometime in the spring of 2009. Currently, Mother of Fire has joined forces with drummer Andie Mazorol (Jose Bove, Hex)."

and another show a little further down the line...March 17 at the Montague Bookmill.
"Raymond Morin is a member of the folk-rock group Pairdown, whose playing recalls Brit-folk acts like Pentangle and The Incredible String Band, as well as the their American contemporaries like Love. Their impressionistic lyrics reveal a strong poetic affinity with modern indie and post-rock. Based in Pittsburgh, Morin is touring solo to support their latest LP, "Holykyle", and will be performing songs from that album as well as instrumentals from the British Folk revival and the Kicking Mule Records era.
Matt Goulet is a fingerstyle guitarist and singer who blends ragtime and early jazz styles with songwriting reminiscent of 60's folk troubadours like John Martyn and Nick Drake. Following a relocation to Western Massachusetts, Goulet began recording tracks for a new album in his home studio, due out in 2009. Live, he is accompanied by violinists Jan Wholey and Katy Dieber, as well as Mark Koyama of Heathen Creek on mandolin.
Ryan Lee Crosby is singer/songwriter from Boston, MA whose confessional songwriting style is as disarming as it is direct. Crosby calls to mind world weary modern songsmiths like Jeff Buckley and Elliot Smith, as well as the hushed atmosphere of early Leonard Cohen. He is touring regionally in support of his new album "Out To Dry".

and another show a little further down the line...March 17 at the Montague Bookmill.
