un-caging the anarchists this sunday no less!
the king st. manor
113 king st.
northampton, ma 01060
melissa st. pierre - "tosses classicism and post-classicism overboard, utilizing the prepared piano -- John Cage's notorious instrument of choice -- and electronic enhancement to sail resolutely in the direction of rock & roll. peppering the strings, hammers and dampers of the piano with a variety of objects, she transforms the instrument's typical timbre: sparkling gamelans chatter; harrowing voodoo drums call out in the night."
trials and tribulations - one show you get anarcho-folk pirate anthems, the next electifyed arcs of noise, and the next is klezmer. one night it's one person, next show there're fifty. what lies in store for the manor? word has it, trials may be kicking out the drone jamz for this one!
this is gonna be a shorter show than usual, so make sure you roll on up in time... we'll be starting no later than 9. promise!

Autonomous Battleship & Mystra present
Ralph White
Ron Schneiderman/Andy Crespo duo
@ the Bookmill, Montague Feb 27th 8:00/$8
THURSTON is expected to play a rare acoustic set for this special event.
It's also the first night of RALPH WHITE's first 'real' US tour(though he's been playing forever..more info below)
Ron Schneiderman is a prime mover in the now famous SUNBURNED HAND OF THE MAN and runs an amazing label called 'Spirit Of Orr'. Andy Crespo is another local legend whose played in great area bands like BARN OWL & THE GUTTERS for dozens of years. This is a rare duo performance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
White was a member of well-loved punk bluegrass outfit Bad Livers but his solo work is possessed of a much more lonesome spark, Exaggerating the implied drone at the heart of the music of Dock Boggs and The Stanley Brothers. White plays wooden six-string banjo, violin, accordion and kalimba and his voice has a high, eerie quality to it that allows it to blend with the various primitive strategies that the music employs to reanimate traditional and original material alike. The use of kalimba situates aspects of the sound in some avant hillbilly fourth world, while the combination of dense matrices of string and White's transporting vocal is extremely psychedelic.

Phloyd's new radio show--EAR CONTACT
Friends and music lovers,
I'm starting a new radio program, "Ear Contact", on WMUA, Amherst
(91.1FM, wmua.org) Thursday mornings 9AM-noon. I'll be sharing the
show with my co-host Dave Hart, so I'm on the air for the next two
Thursdays and then alternating weeks, spinning a wide variety of
improvised sounds from the traditional to the fringe. Musicians, send
me your current recordings, no matter what style or genre, and I'll do
my best to get them played. Also, keep me posted about your live
performances, especially those happening in Western Mass. Of course,
I'd also appreciate feedback from those just in it for the listening!
My best to you in 2009.
