New Year's Eve at Hope & Olive

In 1985 DJ Andujar was in sixth grade and still dreaming about losing his virginity. It's closing in on 2010 and he's also lost his mind: he'll be revisiting the stone-washed decade for the endtimes of this most recent one, the Bio-Tech decade. Yes, 2010 is glowing brightly in front of us with an illuminating embrace on a New England night. Yes, just another January 1st, 2010. Let's make it in style...mullets, MTV, friendship pins, painted buildings, A Flock of Seagulls.

We're hosting a New Year's Eve party with the Hope & Olive in Greenfield. Come for some amazing food and drinks (menu here), and stay for some 80s jams. Calling it "Wild Planet", DJs Andujar and 12XU will have some deep crates of 80s vinyl on hand for this decade's final booty shake. We'll be throwing down new wave, electro, pop and hip-hop, with some fun surprises as well! Of course we'll have the MJ, Madonna and Prince, but how about also Joy Division, the Smiths, the B-52's, Rob Base, Rick James...all on vinyl. What's your request?

The Hope & Olive has a full bar, an expansive menu and a dance floor ready for you. Located in downtown Greenfield (44 Hope St, corner of Olive), the Hope & Olive has blessed Franklin County with one of the friendliest and choicest spots for fine beer, a superb wine list and a menu with an appreciation for local growers. There is plenty of free parking and the night will be right.

Make your reservations for dinner or come down for the dance party. The records roll at 10 and will go till 2. No cover charge for this party.

Xmas in December

Still a bit amorphous, but here's what's coming at you among the signs & sigils of the festive season at One Chevalier, Greenfield, MA:

Art by Angela Zammarelli, Carrie Cavebear, Crystal Regan, D.B. Russell, J.D. Hairston, Joshua Vrysen, Lauri McNamara, Vanessa Brewster, who knows who, maybe you?

Each evening from 7:30 (tentatively):

Monday, 12/21, Summoning of the Xmas spirit, Mr. Uterus, Northpoletapes, D.B. Russell, etc. (Nick Cavebear and Ted Lee were surprise drop ins, you snooze you lose)
Tuesday, 12/22, Mexican potluck, Sord, hopefully Tumble Cat and friends, Ted Lee again with more video magic, more (turned out no Sord, no Tumble Cat, but video installation by Carrie, projections by Ted, space synth by Antrilon, awesome)
Here's Ted's Tuesday recap:

Wednesday, 12/23, Movie night, bring your popcorn, popcorn balls, popcorn chains. Projected entertainment by Ted Lee, Lisette Lopez, maybe you, maybe me? Ben Hersey might even come & scare your pants off.<-- what's actually going to happen is probably totally different than this, should still be a blast.
Thursday, 12/24, Dessert potluck, belltonesuicide, other performing artists by chance.

On Xmas itself, the spirit will probably be too powerful for the uninitiated, but let's wait & see what happens.

Have something to contribute? Want to play or bring or make more exciting Xmas artifacts? Let us know at happyninvalley at gmail, OK? Musical performances need to be on the quiet side because of neighbors, art can be as loud as you like.

Really worth driving up for, and if your reading this from VT: worth hitching up the horse and buggy. got some space in my car at least: 646 761 1410

Son of Salami: yes it's a guy with a dreadhawk sing about his dick + others' dicks over prerecord casio music on a tape deck. yes it sounds stupid. maybe it is. it's also completely transcendent.

Big Kids: feral Vermont rippers (members vomit dichotomy, moscow mule). i know there are people who haven't seen this band yet (cause i've been to all their shows and you weren't there). NO EXCUSES

Chris Weisman and Greg Davis: very nice

dubious info:

MV+EE
with Bummer Road mainstays

Visitaions is one of the most pure, amazing, secret, wonderful bands ever! Hailing from Portland, ME they have a few LPs out on Time-Lag and some splits/collabs with Big Blood. Members of the trio are also involved in other projects: Attar Cups, Prisma, Golden Road.... This is their first time down in a while so really don't miss this. They will be playing both Saturday and Sunday nights. Their take on 'psych-folk' is much more reminiscent of the transcendent music being made in the 60's than the technology drenched affairs of today.

Matthew Thurber is a many times published graphic artist whose "1-800 Mice" has brought him a lot of attention. His work has also been featured in Kramer's Ergot, Arthur Magazine, on LP covers and many NYC show posters. He was the frontman/saxophonist of the defunct elevator music ensemble Soiled Mattress & the Springs and performs solo and with band as Ambergris and DJ Tuxedo Laughing Gas

The Body plays
slow and desperate. sludgy and epic metal.

Prince Rama of Ayodhya will be returning from Europe and saying goodbye to Massachusetts with their Dubious debut

AM Frank is Time-Lag Records' Visitations as Suicide tribute-band, playing covers and originals in the style of Alan Vega and Martin Rev

Liz Tonne, Greg Kelley and Vic Rawlings are somewhat of a super-group of Massachusetts improvisers; expect to hear a pin drop

Tarp is Joshua Burkett and Conrad Capistran making organic music on electronic instruments antique and futuristic.

Cave Bears
i don't wanna go to woodstock
i don't wanna go to woodstock
i don't wanna go to woodstock i don't wanna go to woodstock i don't wanna go to woodstock
i don't wanna go to woodstock i don't wanna go to woodstock i don't wanna go to woodstock

Flaming Dragons of Middle Earth lead by the enigmatic danny cruz, "
the concentrated assault on their instruments with musical and nonmusical intention is their ritual theater of transformation. The results of this alchemy can be wildly ecstatic or completely damaging. I have seen them clear rooms and I have seen them get a few folks dancing, but mostly I've seen them clear rooms. The world may not be ready, but every time I see them I am usually paralyzed in amazement by their heavy mist." - the verbose neil young in the valley advocate

Ryan Fox has probably recorded over one hundred albums in the past four years, none have which have been released. his recordings trace the borders of stoned acid folk, musique concrete, noise and gangsta rap, usually tackling head-on, one genre at a time. expect anything form this live set.

Corvallis Chehalis hailing from Turners Falls and accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, Bryan Gillig sings literate and impressively concise songs about Jesus and Whiskey

Tomorrow in Palmer

At Diamond Junction Bowling Lanes, 1446 Main St , Palmer, MA:

Parts & Labor
http://www.partsandlabor.net/

Death Vessel
http://www.deathvessel.com/

Tumble Cat Poof Poofy Poof
http://www.valleyadvocate.com/article.cfm?aid=9011

The Needy Visions
http://www.myspace.com/theneedyvisions

with DJ sets by Party Master Policy
http://partypolicy.tumblr.com/

Palmer, MA – When Parts & Labor started playing shows back in 2002, their heavily distorted, anthemic rock seemed to have a whole lot more to do with the great bands that existed during the 10 years before Nirvana broke punk music into the mainstream than anything that had come out of the underground in the 10 years since. Now some 7 years later, it’s turns out Parts & Labor were just ahead of the curve as they now lead a pack of new American underground rock bands cropping up across the country from their native Brooklyn, NY to Los Angeles, CA. Packing all the power and passion of Husker Du but updating their sound with a noisy, distinctly post-millennial bent, Parts & Labor have released one fantastic record after another over the latter half of this decade from 2006’s propulsive Stay Afraid to 2007’s landmark Mapmaker to the steady build of 2008’s excellent Receivers. No strangers to western Massachusetts (Dan Friel, singer/keyboardist/sometimes guitarist, is originally from Amherst), Parts & Labor return to this side of the state bringing their power, passion and circuit-bent keyboards to the Diamond Junction Bowling Lanes in Palmer, MA.

Joel Thibodeau, the sole man behind Providence, RI’s Death Vessel, is a man of many awesome contradictions. Despite his formidable stage name, he is not necessarily an imposing character. Short in stature and singing in an effortless falsetto of the highest register, Thibodeau has been using that gorgeously pitched voice over his gently picked guitar to leave crowds slack jawed for a number of years now. Still reeling from the success of 2008’s Nothing is Precious Enough for Us released on Seattle’s notable Sub Pop Records, Death Vessel brings his somewhat old-timey, somewhat otherworldly country-folk back to Palmer for an encore performance to some truly memorable Shed gigs a few years back.

It’s an unlikely pairing for sure, but these kinds of mixed-bag shows have been what the Old Store/Shed folks have made a name for themselves for going on 11 years now. Supporting the two headliners will be local performer and genuinely nice guy Tumble Cat Poof Poofy Poof who manipulates prerecorded keyboard sounds through beat-up boomboxes, tells stories, and sometimes sings a song. In addition, indie-psych band Needy Visions from Boston will kick the night off.

News Flash: Our scene is getting old -- High schoolers get in for $5! Youth target.
