Record fest, record fest

With the holiday season quickly approaching, WMUA 91.1fm offers the greater Amherst community an opportunity to find the perfect gift for the audiophiles in your life. On December 6th, WMUA will host our 1st Annual Record Fest, featuring vinyl vendors and labels from all over New England and the East Coast selling quality records, CDs, movies and ephemera. A wide selection of new and used genres and price ranges will be offered, so whether you're a casual listener looking to dust off the old turntable or a vinyl enthusiast searching for that obscure, out of print title, there will be something to satisfy your tastes. And as our gift to you, there will be free, live musical entertainment and DJ sets throughout the day, including performances by electronic artist Eric Hnatow, post-punk from Rabbit Rabbit, psychedelic pop courtesy of Brown Recluse Sings, and drums and drones from Baltimore rockers Teeth Mountain.

The 1st Annual Record Fest will take place on December 6th from 10am - 3pm in the Cape Cod Lounge of the Student Union Center at UMass Amherst. Proceeds from this event will benefit WMUA 91.1fm, UMass Amherst's not-for-profit student and community-run music, sports and news radio station. Give the gift of hi-fi music to your friends, family or yourself this holiday season, and support college radio in the process!

screening w/ filmmaker presenting @ Amherst Cinema

Filmmaker John Gianvito in Person!
at Amherst Cinema
Plays Wednesday, 11/19 at 7:00 only
With introduction from the director!

"A note at the end of John Gianvito’s Profit Motive and the Whispering Wind cites A People’s History of the United States, by Howard Zinn, as the film’s source and inspiration. But while Mr. Zinn’s book is a passionate and partisan chronicle of American radicalism, Mr. Gianvito’s 58-minute documentary strikes a quieter, more elegiac tone. There is no narration, and virtually no living human beings appear on screen. Instead Profit Motive contemplates the violence and struggle of the past by examining the markers and monuments that turn up in graveyards and roadsides across the country. The calling of birds and the rustle of trees provide most of the commentary, and the effect is somehow to make history more mysteriously distant and more concrete — a matter of stone and weathered plaques inscribed with the records of half-forgotten deeds." - A.O. Scott, NY Times

Director John Gianvito, 2007. 58 mins.
(This screening is a DVD Projection)

Presented in cooperation with the film studies seminar on 1968 and the Social Change Colloquium: 1968 at UMass Amherst

Heaven People, Jow Jow the Death Knell Rung, Janel & Anthony.

Heaven People - Glide yer canoe on a mirror-smooth twilight lake and furcate yr mind in eight shimmering realms of perfect symmetry. With a forthcoming album from Ecstatic Peace these cats are awesomeawesome-oh-by-giddly-gawd-awesome.

Jow Jow the Death Knell Rung - Locally grown strains of Bunwinkie, Red Favorite, Feather, and Whyte Kastle barley reaped by way of International Harvester then fermented and filtered in the kindly counter-cultural tank of Easthampton's Time Machine. Imbibe of the magic antler!

Janel and Anthony - A solemn soundtrack for a slow-motion world in flames, throes of rebirth or some transfigured, entwined and living transmission of both radiating with graceful aplomb.

SAT NOV 15
9pm @ Purple House 109 Bridge St. Northampton, MA
Little Women, Yukon, White Suns, Skinny Vinny, AO Groupuscule

LITTLE WOMEN (members of ZS, Extra Life)
"Little Women is terrifying. Their first full-length, Teeth, is the kind of stuff that haunts Archie Shepp and Cecil Taylor in their worst nightmares. The Brooklyn quartet's saxophone bleats, beyond-angular guitar lines and purposeful, spastic drumming commands attention...you'll find incredible form and structure and even hints at traditional bebop tonality within Little Women's incredibly dense walls of sound, which effectively separates them from the bulk of free jazz/noise acts...Anyone who has seen this live has first-hand knowledge of terror." - Impose magazine

YUKON (members of Extra Life)
Three-piece masterpiece from Baltimore. Tight as fuck, loud as shit. Engagingly 90's in all ways. The last time Yukon came to Hampshire it snowed two days later...

WHITE SUNS
NME thinks that White Suns sounds like "wolf eyes covering 'confusion is sex'-era sonic youth". But anyway, it's really epic music from Wesleyan and the apts. of Brooklyn. BYOB

SKINNY VINNY
The duo of Skinny Vinny has been making music and playing together since 2002. Inspired by speed chess, fast art, and all things Duchamp, Josh Jefferson and Andrew Eisenberg work together to define, refine and otherwise extend their understanding of music. Andrew Eisenberg plays percussion on an assortment of modified drum parts that he has reduced and eroded thru a process of playing and breaking them. Josh Jefferson plays alto sax and bass clarinet.Over the years he has focused more on abstract sounds and extended techniques and is always in constant pursuit for the abstract unknown.

STARPOLI, BONOS, YOUNG (AO Groupuscule)
Jeremy Starpoli, Peter Bonos and Neil Young. Trombone, trumpet, percussion.
